Africa must engage China with win-win strategies - expert

A leading Sino-Africa expert says African nations, including Botswana, need to develop strategies to ensure that engagement with the continent's burgeoning business partner is mutually beneficial.

In an exclusive interview with Mmegi Business in Gaborone recently, Professor Garth Shelton of Wits University in South Africa said the continent needed to manage its relationship with China better when doing business with 'the rising dragon' in order for the engagement to result in sustainable changes in economic and social conditions.

"The continent has to demand and ensure quality from Chinese companies because we are in control of our decisions," Shelton said, referring to widespread anxiety that Chinese products are substandard.
