A record P16 billion collected in taxes

The Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) has reported an increase in revenue collection for the 2006/2007 financial year. This is the second annual report of BURS since its inception with the mandate of collecting revenue on behalf of government from income tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), Fuel Levy, the Southern African Customs Union and other sources.

In the 2007 report, Commissioner General Freddy Modise says revenue collected amounts to P15.8 billion, an increase of 33.9 percent from P4 billion in 2005/2006.  Modise says this amount includes revenue amounting to P57.7 million or 0.33 percent of the total revenue collected on behalf of Government.

The report shows that income tax is leading the revenue collected. It stands at P6.9 billion, which is an increase of 16,6 percent from the actual collections of P5.9 billion in 2005/2006.  Customs Union receipts came second with a total collection of P6.6 billion, followed by VAT with P2.1 billion, Fuel Levy with P130 million and others with P82 million.
Modise says the achievement is remarkable in that it came against the background of low business "confined in the Botswana economy and government's decision to reduce both income tax and value added tax collected."
