BDP primaries' results not to be celebrated by opposition!

The BDP primary elections results were unprecedented.Gone are the days of the Committee of 18 which selected candidates for parliament and the councils.

During those days the Committee of 18 men and women recommended their favourites to the status of candidates for general elections with little fear of being vetted out of the race for member of parliament or council. There were no hassles, no upsets, no surprises.

The outgoing MPs and councilors were always confident they would always stand to fight out with an opposition member in the next elections. Participatory democracy was unknown or deliberately sidelined; the masses were excluded from the election of the candidates of their choice, preference;  deadwood was recycled over and over again and there was very little the masses could do. MPs and councilors became lifetime members in the institutions which were supposed to represent the people. Introduction of the primaries has changed the predictability of the incumbents at the next parliament or council. New faces and new voices are the order of the day, thanks to Bulela-ditswe!
