Students' paintings simply brilliant

As the curtain comes down on the month-long Kweneng Art Teachers Association's exhibition at the Kgosi Sechele Museum in Molepolole a few paintings that occupy the space at the heritage site's gallery remain etched in the minds of those who might have come across them. The paintings by students from around the region are a true reflection of the artistic potential among the country's youth.

In fact some pieces look like they had passed through the hands of accomplished artists yet they were done by amateur secondary school learners; some of them astonishingly from junior secondary school level. Without doubt President Ian Khama is one of the most prominent personalities - if not the most popular face in this country - which is why he is a regular feature in the exhibitions and art galleries. One of the most impressive pieces at the Molepolole exhibition was a combination of realistic and abstract paintings, showing a portrait of President Khama, a head of a zebra, a hippo and a woman immersed in deep clean water. Evidently, this is where good imagination and national pride meet. The artwork shows the President in deep thought as if to suggest that the co-existence of the nation's natural resources, the people and the wildlife is entirely in his hands and - of course - good national development planning.
