Still no buyer for Piet's iron smelting sculpture

Sculptor Joseph Piet's sentimental work, a sculptor depicting the iron smelting culture of his tribe, Mathula-tshipi, is still lying in the Thapong garden without a buyer, four months after he put it up for sale.

He could have chosen to spend four months moulding something else that would immediately appeal to the art collector but Piet, who saw vestiges of iron smelters in his home village of Kumakwane when he was a little boy, chose something sentimental, cultural, and maybe too personal.

Iron smelting culture of the Mathula-tshipi, a tribe of mixed race, reminds Piet of those days when his kinsmen were literally calling the shots in an area where they were the only people skilled in iron technology.
