Son of the soil loses its sparkle

The Son of the Soil 2013 event has lost the ingredients that made it a unique cultural festival. The event has quickly developed into just another cultural event of traditional food, music and Leteise fashion show.

The eighth annual event organised by a group called Bana Ba Mmala was held over the weekend at Masimo Getaway at Rasesa in Kgatleng District.  In the past years the Son of the Soil used to be a nostalgic participatory event that used to take participants down memory lane with a number of activities such as games, songs, food and storytelling around the fire.Games like, Mhele, Morabaraba, Seragantshwane, Gololo, Dibeke, Safe, Koi were revived.

This year saw the event for the first time being held at a venue with a stage.  Traditional music and jazz artists, Gong Master, Seragantshwane, Mogwana and Punah performed on stage.  DJ Fondo was also on the deck mixing 'scratched' oldies. The popular evening programme of Son of the Soil was turned into just a usual festival where music bands perform on stage to a screaming crowd. At night there were no games like; Mmampudulele, Chukulele, Mmaiphitlhwaphitlhwane, and Terena Chukuchuku, that made Son of the Soil such a nostalgic event as the old got young again.   Despite the beautiful full moon the crowd could not play the  song games such as; Mma Jane, Bo Dimo, Lee le le Bodileng, Moipatele Cheri, Yo Mongwe O Teng Le Nna Ke Teng,  and A O Ka Etsa Ntho Ena like they used to do during the past events.  There were were storytelling and riddle games around the fire or eating of snacks like Kabu.  There was not even a bonfire. However the crowd loved the entertainment. The famous North versus South choir competition which matches people from north of Dibete against the south was once again easily won by the South choir.
