The organiser of the usually controversy-stricken Miss Universe Botswana pageant, Safie Sekgwa hopes this years event will have a smooth transition to grand finale.Speaking at a press conference to launch the top 12 contestants on Friday, Sekgwa said that he would try to ensure the pageant is a clean one. Sekgwa however said that controversy is a pattern among beauty pageants worldwide.

“We are not the only ones who experience such problems; even bigger pageants worldwide experience controversy. We are thinking of engaging psychologists this year so that the girls can offload their problems if they have issues,” Sekgwa said.He believes their involvement might help eliminates some of the factors that trigger controversies. He said that allegations that he had reneged on promises to give the reigning queen Sheila Molelekwa a scholarship to study in the United States of America (US) are unfounded because Molelekwa is yet to complete her reign.

Sekgwa said that after completing her tenure and crowning her successor, Molelekwa would then be awarded her scholarship to New York. He said, “Molelekwa should fulfill her duties before she goes to school.” On talking about the top 12,Sekgwa said that they chose them from a total of 30 that they had selected from the auditions.  Sekgwa revealed that the auditions were restricted to Gaborone because previously they had tried Palapye, Maun and Francistown only to have a total of less than 10 girls coming forward. He explained that Gaborone has proved to be the stronghold with a total of close to 100 girls tuning up for auditions.
