Odes as Bathoen statue is unveiled

Tswana poetry and historical "teachings" dominated at the unveiling of Kgosi Bathoen II's statue at Goo-Ramontshiwa in Kanye on Friday.

The event attracted a large crowd including dikgosi from various parts of the country and as it was a day to unveil a heritage site Tswana poetry and the history of the great kgosi kept the gathering spellbound.

First it was Kgosi Mmolaatshepe of Segwagwa with a poem that elaborated how the Bathoen II found the tribe in disarray when he took over the reins in 1928 and worked tirelessly to rebuild it, and how some who were against him ended up in places like Manyana.
