Mapetla revolutionises style to stay alive

The first single off Mapetla's latest album Electrified, released on Friday promises to be a head-banger as its producers worked hard to match contemporary dance styles associated with the likes of DJ Fresh and DJ Cleo.

The track, Uyosala Wena, hit the local airwaves on Friday and early observation is that it could catapult Mapetla back to the Phanz Phezulu hey day. Mapetla has indeed attempted to leave no stone unturned, as he joined forces with one of the hottest music names in Africa.  He has collaborated with Zambia's General Ozzy for track 14, My Love. That makes Mapetla the first local artist to catch on the popular African dance rhythm, which for the last five years seemed to elude Batswana musicians.

This is the same music style that has made Nigerian urban music such a hit on our shores. Mapetla would hope his collaborative effort with General Ozzy, popular for songs like Onamami and Potential, would further enhance his musical legacy.True to its album sleeve and title, the new Mapetla music has heavy influence from electro house, which has turned DJ Fresh and Euphonik into household names. Mapetla, however, has adapted the urban dance styles to reinforce his Kwaito style, as in the singles, Uyosala Wena, Thando, and Sghubu. In the new album Mapetla also collaborates with Juju Boy, Kay-Zee, Ghavorr, Lloyd of Wizards, B-Flow, Evelyn and Princesses.
