Mabijo On The Move Volume One humorous

Twenty-one years ago, one of Botswana's leading cartoonists, Tebogo Motswetla, launched Mabijo, the character that has become a household name.

Over the years, Mabijo become part of us, someone everybody loves to hate. This year, Motswetla, urged on by the fans of the character, decided to publish volume one of a collection of Mabijo strips namely, Mabijo on the Move. Perhaps another renowned local artist, Simon Seisa aptly described the Mabijo character when he said in the foreword of the book: "The Mabijo character has a local flair, it is wittingly informative of Botswana backyard life, colloquially known as 'Radio Mall'. The pun and the ironic punch-line complete the electric dry humour enjoyed by the ordinary man on the street.

The artwork is executed in warm colours reflecting the country's weather." As mentioned before, Mabijo on the Move is a collection of cartoon strips the artist has made so far. Avid Mabijo followers would most certainly remember some of the older strips. One strip in the book that is likely to leave readers in fits of laughter is the one on page 41 in which a woman who is in love with Mabijo goes to consult a witchdoctor to help her 'bind' their love. The doctor gives her a magical charm and asks her to take it home, prepare a nice meal and perform a ritual dance over the food singing, "Mabijo, o seka wa ntlhala, o seka wa ntlhala, o seka wa ntlhala!"
