The Thapong Arts Centre was on Friday a hive of activity as 40 local artists, including art teachers, got down to work and came up with their first ever art works made from fabrics.

Fabrics as art medium is a new concept in Botswana, but thanks to three days of work shopping by American fabrics art guru, Victoria Greasing, on Friday all the 40 participants were able to showcase their first practical works in fabrics. From a distance, the works on display at Thapong on Friday, first could be passed on as some mumbo-jumbo of multi-coloured fabrics with nothing to offer. That is until a skilled artist takes you through the entire cobweb and explains what it means.

In fact, what looked like one huge decoration with multi-coloured fabrics actually consisted of five different art concepts that were interpreted and juxtaposed by the artists from one corner of the studio to the other. One of the participants, Keatlaretse Kwati, a teacher from Molefhi Secondary school in Mochudi, says what people see now in the studio is the result of a group assignment at the end of the three-day workshop by the American artist.
