Development of Manshamakose heritage sites for tourism

This installment is a follow up of a series of three articles on the development of Greater Francistown Heritage Trail. It aims to provoke the interest of Bakalanga people living in areas surrounding Sebina village. It utilises heritage sites to resuscitate the concept of Manshamakose, which was developed some time in the late 1980s. The concept functioned effectively until the late 1990s among the five villages of Marapong, Nshakazhogwe, Marobela, Kombani (now called Nswazwi) and Sebina. The acronym 'Manshamakose' is derived from writing the names of the villages in the order provided above. The original concept was pioneered by several individuals who called for the need to develop a platform for exchange of socio-political and economic issues affecting these villages.

Manshamakose Heritage Trail

Manshamakose concept is now being resuscitated among these people through an ambitious project aimed at utilising the diverse cultural background of these villages for tourism purposes. The idea of establishing a trail linking these heritage sites forms part of the Botswana National Museum's plan to open and develop 100 cultural and natural heritage sites of Botswana for cultural tourism purposes. The project aims to establish access roads, install signage, design site trails and employ custodians or community guides through Ipelegeng Programme. To date, no heritage sites in the region have benefited from the 100 Monuments Project. As part of a programme addressing the shortcomings of this 100 Monuments Project, the Botswana National Museum recently embarked on an extensive and inclusive project aimed at developing a trail linking the majority of outstanding heritage sites in the Bukalanga region. The Greater Francistown Heritage Trail was launched at this year's Domboshaba Cultural Festival. During the development of this heritage trail many elders and community leaders interviewed suggested the need to develop more heritage sites in the area. This motivated the development of the proposed heritage trail linking these villages. Community mobilisation has already been done in Sebina and will be extended to the other four villages to help kick start the project. Once operational, the trail is anticipated to provide tourists with camping facilities near certain heritage sites, local guides and perhaps the Levuna Mpapho Museum concept will follow suit.
