Dembo inspires from the grave

Even after his death, the magic in Leornard Dembo's music continues to inspire people in Botswana and his native Zimbabwe.

His hit song, Chitekete is still as popular more than 20 years after its release. The melodious song, dominated with the sound of a silky lead guitar and imposing bass, is an example of the late musician's great creativity. It is thus befitting that even on this side of the border, Dembo's influence continues to be felt.  The legendary musician's influence together with others doing the same style of music has played a big part in the formation of a band playing similar music to his in Botswana. Maitengwe Super Sounds is a testimony to the fact that Zimbabwean music, popularly known as Mzakazo, is still enjoyed by many.

When they first appeared on Botswana Television (Btv)'s Mokaragana last year, this group could not win many admirers but certainly excited audiences nation wide with their unique style of music and dance. Theirs is not your usual Kwasakwasa/Rhumba style.  It's fast paced with quick shifting leg movements called Chovachova. The founding member of the band, Elvis Billy from Maitengwe's love for Mzakazo, inspired the formation of this band in 2008.
