Culture essential for tourism diversification

MOLEPOLOLE: Culture and heritage can play an important role in diversifying both the country's tourism sector and economy.

The Marketing Manager of Botswana Tourism (BT) Obenne Mbaakanyi said this when addressing guests at the Annual Dithubaruba Cultural Festival in Molepolole on Saturday. Mbaakanyi, who was standing in for BT Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Myra Sekgororoane, said tourists are always eager to understand the lives and past of people of a certain area they visit and Botswana tourism can cash in on this by tapping into the untouched tourist attraction aspect of culture.

Mbaakanyi thanked Bakwena for showcasing their rich culture through Dithubaruba and encouraged other tribes to follow suit. She assured them the support of BTO to help them market and sell their culture outside the country's borders. Her words were echoed by those of Batshani Tjiyapo, Deputy Director in the Department of Culture and Youth saying if many tribes copied what Bakwena did, it would be a giant step towards cultural preservation. Tjiyapo said it was important to recognise and encourage culture preservation groups for the good job they do to make sure that the nation's heritage does not go extinct.
