Children learn Traditional games in Oodi

A fun and rather unique way for children to spend Saturdays has been established in Oodi where "The Voice Of Child" organisation aims to create a friendly, informative and safe environment for children to interact and learn in. The organisation currently operates from Black Aces playgrounds in the village, every Saturday from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.

According to The Voice of Child's founding member and chairperson, Mpolokeng Mbatha, who also works as a project assistant at Dow and Associates, the organisation targets primary and some junior secondary students and teaches them traditional games.  Games the children are taught include; "Botlhako lele, tlhakolele! Leele le le bodileng, marax, Blackmanpatile, diphiri, diketo, morabaraba and many others.  Mbatha says she is teaching the children all of these so that they can identify their talents, among other things, and also in an effort  to monitor the children's response to the experience.

"Children are divided into groups determined by their ages.  They play for about  an hour after which they are taken for an evaluation.  When we evaluate the children, we take into special consideration their personalities. For example, some children are too shy to play with others.  Some like to isolate themselves while others are bullies. We assess the children based on their interaction with others and provide them with counselling,"  explains Mbatha who says this is done in an effort to try and improve their lives in the future.
