Brincat's Passion is theatre as "happening"

Trudging along a dusty path, dodging thorn trees, and hiding from the sun is not your average theatre-goer's idea of "modern" drama.

Plush seats, surround sound effects, and a digital light show are what put bums on seats nowadays. But on a patch of eerily quiet, boulder-strewn scrub land just outside Rasesa a few kilometres north of Gaborone, every weekend this month, a lucky few are experiencing one of the most original and moving approaches to a well-worn theatre tradition that Botswana has ever seen.

Aldo Brincat and an amazing team of young local actors and musicians have put together a brilliant re-imagining of the Easter Passion play. Stagings of the Passion are common enough at this time of year, usually with some attempt to update the scenario and make the story "relevant," but this version is like nothing we have seen before.
