The Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) has condemned plans by some artists to boycott the country's 2014 general elections.

Some disgruntled performers within the industry are said to be campaigning so artists do not vote in the next elections because the government has allegedly been insensitive.

The alleged agitators' main gripe is the new and restrictive Liquor Act, which they believe has crippled the music industry.  The controversial piece of legislation was implemented in 2008 and since then, artists claim, their earnings have dwindled because business hours have been drastically reduced.   In Gaborone, rhumba icon Frank 'Franco' Lesokwane declared openly that he is for the boycott move.
