Bisto the shy music man

For a decade now, disco musician Bisto (Peter Maunge) has been one of the most notable names in local music, but never performs live.

His hit song filled with cheeky lyrics, Koloi Ya Sekgoropa, was the toast of various dusty streets parties and shebeens around the country. Although his music attracts a street-wise crowd, Bisto is a very shy, reserved man.His followers, who have longed for his live performances might not ever see the musician live in concert."I am a shy person and I do not think I can face a big crowd. The idea just scares me. I have to confess that is the major reason why people have never seen me perform live. I have done some promotions in front of shops in places like Selebi Phikwe. Apart from that, I have not had the resources to do it," Bisto explained.

The 45-year-old says he is a perfectionist and says he never wanted to try something that might degrade his personality and career."I have seen guys try to perform live and most of the time, you find that it is only that one person who does it right while the rest of the band cannot give the crowd the same sound they get from a CD. I do not want to do that with my music," he said.A graphic designer by profession, Bisto has juggled the two for the last 10 years. Recently, however, he quit his formal job at Botswana Technology Centre to start his own business.Bisto has produced five disco albums but remains very humble about his contribution to that genre in Botswana.
