Baobab choir wins MAD school challenge

Participating schools unleashed all their creativity and energy at Maitisong on Friday during the My African Dream (MAD) Annual School Challenge, making the judges' job even harder.

However, Baobab Primary School choir once again outshone the rest with their breathtaking displays. Consisting of boys and girls, the choir wore their blue school uniform with Botswana flag bandanas. About six of the children wore African attire shirts and sun hats with jeans. The choir captivated the audience and judges alike with their melodious song, Botswana ke lefatshe la rona (Botswana is our country). After successfully winning the audience's attention, the youngsters made everyone scream with their spectacular performance in the popular Setswana song, Ga ke battle go nyalwa kwa ga ngwaketse. Singing along to the song, the applauded loudly as the pupils with harmonious voices sang and danced. They scratched their tiny bodies while singing the phrase, tshutshu ke longwa ke lesonya - making other people tearful while some laughed and cheered. These fabulous performances were their winning lottery ticket. Regrettably, their famous Marimba band did not win the trophy despite a heart-warming show.

Gaborone International School (GIS) traditional group did not want to be left behind as they displayed an unbelievably brilliant traditional dance that drove the crowd wild; as the judges responded by awarding them second position. The children were over the moon with excitement and vowed that they would be more prepared next year to snatch the crown from Baobab who have now taken it for the second year running. The school also displayed a nice marimba piece during which they danced and played their instruments beautifully.
