Police are investigating a suspected suicide after a 48-year-old man was found hanging from a tree at Matema ward, Maitengwe, early Sunday morning.

Confirming the incident, Tutume Police Station Commander Superintendent Theetso Kula said police received a report at around 1:53am after the man was discovered hanging from a tree. Kula said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that the deceased was expected to undergo a post-mortem examination this week. However, The Monitor has learnt that the incident follows an alleged assault on the man's wife in Francistown, where he reportedly assaulted her before fleeing to his home village. According to information received, the man allegedly believed that his wife had died following the assault. He reportedly drove to Maitengwe, parked his vehicle in his mother's yard, and later went to a nearby bush, where he was found hanging from a tree. Meanwhile, Tatitown police are investigating the alleged assault, with the man's wife reportedly hospitalised and fighting for her life. The circumstances surrounding both incidents remain under investigation.
