FRANCISTOWN: Bopaganang Basha Youth Centre has launched its new play called Seragantshwane.

In an interview with Monitor, the coordinator and scriptwriter of the play Lyenel Nkosi said they came up with the idea after research findings that incest is still common in many households more especially in the rural areas.

He said many children find themselves vulnerable because they stay with their relatives whom they regard as breadwinners and such people use that as an advantage. He added that they have discovered that incest is one of the major contributors to the HIV/AIDS scourge that has devastated lives in Botswana. He said in their play they focused on spreading the message of abstinence. He said abstinence is the safest practice to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.Nkosi noted that people are shy to talk about such issues hence they found it fit to communicate with people in a form of a theatre. He said as the organisers they were happy with the turnout. "We were expecting less than 100 people but more than 130 attended and that resulted in some people having to stand," he said, adding that they had dignitaries from the Department Of Arts and Culture BOCAIP, YOHO and Ghetto artists. Nkosi also said their next production would be a piece called The Next Shift, which will be focusing on world economic recession, which has affected mineworkers and their families and dependents. He said most people do not understand what recession means. He added that they want to communicate that message particularly to the ordinary miner. He said when the mines were first hit by recession and mines had to retrench some of their employees, those affected wanted to take their employers to court because they did not understand their situation was beyond employers' control.
