Visual artists begin to reap rewards

Some local visual artists who have been mostly viewing their efforts as 'labour of love' have become the first beneficiaries of government's initiative to empower the arts under the theme: Towards Artistic Excellence by 2016.

Although some artists might have been feeling unappreciated, it came as a huge relief when President Ian Khama introduced changes that sought to 'honour and celebrate their contribution to Botswana's cultural development'.

The winners of the revamped National Art Exhibition (formerly known as Artists in Botswana) are Wendy Borello (best in painting), Uhuru Kgope (best in graphics), Ziki Kraai (best in sculpture), Tshepang Simon (best in printmaking), Eugenie Skelton (best in photography), Ray Gare (best in mixed media), Phuti Babotlhale (most promising artist), and Steven Diseko (best in show).
