Vee As Popular As Ever

Odirile 'Vee' Sento, one of the leading musicians in the country, proved he is still popular with Batswana from all walks of life when he launched his sixth album Kasiology at Chez Ntemba last Saturday. Some observers said Vee's launch, which started at 10am, was one of the biggest in Botswana so far.

This came at a time when some critics claimed the young kwaito sensation had lost some of his magic. Vee rose to fame after he released one of his best ever albums Kasi Angel in 2003 when he was still under Eric Ramco's stable. His next album Ntja Mme, under South African producer Guffy Pilane, was not as well received as Kasi Angels.
Last year, the gifted singer released another album Ditshipi Tsame under his Black Money Makers stable and the album received mixed reviews. However, the young artiste is optimistic that the current album will do well and outclass some of his old works. Lately, he made a controversial statement saying that if his album did not sell at least 10,000 copies in the first four weeks of its release, he would quit his music career for good - a daring statement, indeed.
"I am happy to say that within the first two weeks I have sold 6,000 copies and I have only 4,000 to go before I reach my target",  Vee announced ecstatically to Mmegi.
Vee was also happy that many artistes from the music fraternity came in large number to support him. Some of the artistes who performed at the launch were Franco, Dikakapa, Culture Spears, Eskimos, Chris Manto7, P-Mac, Lesh, Wizards of the Desert and Devine.
Franco, who is regarded by many as the leading kwasa kwasa musician, behaved like a gentleman when he paid tribute to the late artiste Bull Dog by singing one of his favourite songs, Ditonki Tsele Di Kae.
Earlier, Chris Manto7 had also paid tribute to fellow artistes by sampling some of their songs in a move some industry watchers believe was aimed at demonstrating that local musicians were like brothers and sisters despite rumours of behind-the-scene catfights.
Phenyo Molefinyane, one of the launch organisers, said Vee was still very popular with the people. He said the artist knew that children adored him, which was why the event started in the morning to cater for the young ones. By the time Vee sang a few songs from his latest album to bid his young fans goodbye, the place was teeming with children. Whenever they were asked who their favourite artist was, they were all unanimous in their response as they shouted, "Vee!"
According to Molefinyane, the tickets for the children's event sold out.
"Vee is still popular and nothing will ever bring this young man down," he said.
One of the veterans of local music and former Botswana Music Union (BOMU) president Taolo Moshaga did not hide his disappointment at the fact that Batswana do not respond to local artistes as they do with foreign counterparts.
"Batswana should stop pretending that they are bored when they watch local artistes performing yet they are excited and scream when foreign artistes perform even if they don't understand the language."
Moshaga also said that young musicians like Vee, Culture Spears and Dikakapa have a good support base and should be given all the necessary support.
Showtime observed that although most of the supporting artistes like Franco did their best to perform, the people did not respond as anticipated. The place only became alive when Vee came on stage with Vee's young fans leaving their jumping-castles to dance to their hero's vibrant tunes. Although it could be argued that the reasons for the response was that it was 'Vee's show' and most people there were his fans, Molefinyane believes that Vee had been able to prove a point.
"This shows that Vee is still the king of house-kwasa in Botswana. Those who have written him off should really start reframing their minds because the young man is here to stay."
According to Molefinyane, most of the supporting artistes agreed that Vee's launch had attracted one of the biggest crowds. Vee has vowed to cement his place as one of the top local artistes in the country by embarking on a nationwide show and promoting Kasiology in all the major centres.
