Trevisto breaks new ground with refreshing S'poko album

At a time when the accent is on music's communicative aspect, Trevisto's debut album, Matsubutsubu, will be a lungful of fresh, early morning air.

Time was when a song not only entertained but also conveyed a message. Not every young musician does that nowadays but if he sticks to what he did with this album, Trevisto will continue telling you something about what he has seen and knows of life thus far.

On S'poko he offers a narrative that attempts to explain how passion killings come about. The story is of an ill-fated girl, a lager beggar who prowls drinking places for cheap thrills. In one such outing, she identifies and sidles up a mark at a bar and asks him to buy her beer. After quaffing it, she goes outside for reinforcements. She finds and announces to a like-minded girl friend loitering outside the bar that she has ensnared what career female lager beggars call "sepoko" - often contracted to 's'poko' in speech. The word is Setswana for 'ghost' but is also used as bar lingo for male milch cows. Anyway, the girl goes back inside with the friend whom she introduces to the ghost and asks it to buy her beer as well. And so the ghost plies both girls with beer until drinking-up time when somehow the freeloading friend manages to disappear and the lager beggar is left with the ghost. Outside the bar, the ghost wants to take her to his place for the obvious, she resists, a scuffle ensues and she asks for help from spectators.
