Thapong hosts Ngoni's Meloko Exhibition

One of the best known visual artists in Botswana, Wilson Ngoni, is currently exhibiting his artworks under the theme: "Meleko Exhibition" at Thapong Visual Arts Centre in Gaborone.

Ngoni, who is famous for his captivating and thought-provoking surrealistic works, decided to mount more realism paintings this time round. Most if not all of the paintings at the exhibition are oil on canvas and there is no doubt that the artist has somehow mastered using this medium. The most eye-catching artwork at the exhibition is the elaborately detailed three-piece Botswana Baskets. There is no doubt that the artist took his time creating the pieces and viewers are likely to think that it is a photographic image until they feel the paint on the canvas with their hands. Mothebe's House is most certainly inspired by the works of Rantefe Mothebe, the veteran artist who used to have a studio in Thapong. Ngoni must be commended for paying tribute to Mothebe who has sadly given up on being a full-time artist. Arts & Culturehas recently learnt that the ageing artist has relocated to his home village of Mochudi leaving his studio to be used by younger and upcoming artists. This was expected though because during an interview with the artist two years back, he had expressed his desire to partly retire from art and relocate to his home village. After having mentored many young artists it was fitting that Ngoni paid tribute to him and interestingly if one knew Mothebe's works, he or she would think that the piece Mothebe's Home was one of them. Moshupa Scene captures the greenery surrounding the famous Moshupa hills which are known for their 'hanging rocks'.

This piece like Botswana Basket is beautifully detailed and crafted. My Gal is a provocative piece in the sense that it features the uncovered torso of a beautiful woman. The torso appears from behind torn canvas making this one of the most exquisite pieces at the exhibition. Needless to say, the piece is going to be a subject of much discussion among art-lovers. Landscape with Gemsbok is another piece in which the artist paid attention to details and it is most certainly going to be a hit with tourists. Another artwork that is likely to attract the eye of tourists is the piece Watching, which features a lion looking at antelopes from a hidden spot. The antelopes which are oblivious to the fact that they are moments away from danger are busy grazing. Being an artist who mostly specialises in surrealist pieces, Ngoni could not resist the temptation to include surreal works such as Writing History, Angel of Sugar and The Revolution.
