Sebabatsane might leave many itching

Sebabatsane's second project under Afro - Heavens Creations cannot be rated among the best but is without any shadow of doubt a vast improvement from the last one.

The eight-piece compilation only came out on Saturday and the group had an opportunity to give their fans the first taste at Zebras Club during Gong Master's album launch. It combines contemporary traditional sounds with some jazzy melodies that make it uniquely African. Female vocalists Maria Ogotseng and Tshegofatso Tshole have voices to die for and were properly guarded against exaggerating and pulling the cord too long during the recording.

Their first album released under the same label last year, was a total flop but that did not dent the youngsters' spirits, they did not despair, went back into the studio with more vigour and the results are there to tell. Tshabang Sebabatsane, they warn in the first track and indeed competitors would have to give them due respect or they could be in for a big surprise. The execute confidence and their stage performance make you put everything down and focus. Boitumelo Lucas and Othusitse Malapela are the other two male members of the quartet. Like the two sisters, the young men also have come of age. Malapela who is Shumba Ratshega's cousin has the potential to match his famed cousin. In this album, he sounds more like Ratshega but a lot more poetic in his presentation. He authoritatively imposes himself in all the tracks he leads, very easy to tell when he is not at the forefront.
