SA Idols season opens without 'a capella' rules

The fifth season of South African Idols has started with the first leg of auditions having been broadcast on DStv on Sunday.

The judges for the season are Randall Abrahams, Mara Louw, Sony BMG marketing director, Dave Thompson, and radio personality, Gareth Cliff, the initial Idols judges. In this season of Idols, M-Net has revealed that the strict 'a capella' rule will not be enforced during the auditions. The Idols wannabes will be permitted to bring musical instruments such as guitars, drums and accordions into the auditions room. But the contestants will still be judged on their vocal abilities. In a statement released on M-Net's website, director for general entertainment, Theo Erasmus, is quoted as saying the tweaks will keep the show fresh and exciting for viewers and contestants alike.

"Idols has proved to be a sure hit on television schedules across the globe and with these small changes viewers can look forward to even more Idols magic. We will be tapping into the lively summer vibe and by having auditions during this laid-back period we could attract more fresh talent that might not have been able to attend auditions previously," Erasmus.
