Rock band Nodd releases debut album

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Since the death of rock band Metal Orizon leader, Spencer Sekwababe, rock music in Botswana has been on the rocks despite the massive following that it enjoys.

At their peak, the charismatic Metal Orizon took the music industry by storm, redefining rock to suit the local market, as the genre was viewed largely as foreign. The influence of rock is far-reaching, and has had significant impact on fashion and film styles worldwide. Its growth in Botswana is evidenced by the fashion trends of its followers, the majority being the middle aged.

Black cowboy hats, tight black leather outfits and the infamous prints on t-shirts, which have been largely associated with a cult often referred to as Satanism, make rock fans stand out from the rest. Most rock artists are known as hard- drinking and hard-living characters. However, contemporary rock has seen the emergence of modest fans that do not necessarily wear a t-shirt with a skull or a knife dripping with blood. Nodd, a relatively new group in the music scene, wants to strike a balance and ensure that everyone is brought on board, irrespective of which music genre they favour.
