New Look Sarafina Showing At Maitisong

Is it an insult to black liberation struggle during the apartheid South Africa or just another call for racial harmony in the apartheid free Southern Africa? This is one question that any viewer of Aldo Brincat's much awaited new look Sarafina, might ask themselves after witnessing the stage acts currently on going at Maitisong theatre. The play is scheduled to run until March 30.

Brincat, who hails from Durban, happens to be the director of the new look play as well as the director of this year's Maitisong festival. What is eye catching about this political play is the way the director has fashioned out some of the characters.

The Wednesday night show did not only twist the story line of the original play but went a further mile by including a cast of Indians, West Africans and Whites. In the original play, black and white character's roles are clearly defined. The black students are rebelling against apartheid, while those who play the roles of white people would put on a red ball to signify so.
