Movie offers disturbing insight into woman's struggle for survival

Greed and materialism have always been the root of evil. Generations from across the face of earth have seen a lot of bloodshed as a result of men and women pursuing selfish interests aimed at amassing material wealth by hook and crook.

It is this kind of behaviour that has inspired authors and scriptwriters to write successful novels and films that continue to capture the world's imagination. The world societies see in this theme (of greed and materialism) a mirror in which they see a part of themselves, which reminds them of the need to move away from this deviance and progressively pursue a life of moral rectitude. As one pundit once put it, "There is something perverse about more than enough. When we have more, it is never enough. It is always somewhere out there, just out of reach. The more we acquire, the more elusive enough," he said, complaining of this vice of materialism that has corroded contemporary society.

In her successful series O Bone O Ja Sereto' part 3 and 4, the ambidextrous scriptwriter Cathy D, employed both her creative mind and research on Botswana society - people's social relations to craft this movie. She paints a frightening picture, that though Botswana which has moved from being a poor country to a middle-income country - has regressed massively in its moral rectitude. Is it the economic development itself that is causing this moral corruption where a father could just ransom off their children to the 'wealthy' men? This is one of the uncomfortable questions that people find themselves fumbling with, especially in an African state, where social mores are still held in high regard.
