Mochudi Dramatists Steal BOTA Show

Maranyane Brigades from Mochudi on Friday ran away with the Botswana Training Authority (BOTA) premier award for drama competitions for vocational institutions.

Maranyane won with their play Kante manong a godimo a e bona. But it was not Maranyane's play, which scooped the Best-Written Play Award, with that honour, along with the individual prize of Best Male Actor, going to new entrants Tonota College of Education (TCE). The teachers training institution also scooped second runner-up in the female category, on their way to finishing second in the hotly contested event featuring four finalists at Maitisong, in Gaborone.

The overall winners did not only celebrate the floating trophy but also saw their director walking away with Best Play Director, with Nananyana Keba controversially awarded Best Female Actress award, despite playing a minor role in the play. She played the role of a child.  Another Maranyane male,  last year's winner of the male category,  Kabelo Mfetane, failed to repeat the feat as he finished runner-up.  Another Maranyane actress, playing old woman Mma Mothusi, also became the first runner-up.  Interestingly, people who played old men or old women won the entire individual awards, with the exception of the Best Female Actress. Zwenshambe Brigades came fourth, while Mahalapye Development Trust finished third, in an arrangement reminiscent of last week's finishing order that decided the last four finalists.
