Masiela fund-raising for Hugh Masekela?

Some local musicians are up in arms against the Masiela Trust Fund for inviting South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela to perform at their fund-raising dinner "for an astronomical fee".

Officials confirmed that Masekela is going to perform at the fund-raising event next month. According to sources, the South African veteran muso wants P80,000 for the show and this might push the bill to P100,000 once accommodation costs are added. A local musician, who preferred anonymity, said it was clear the trust would be raising funds for Masekela and not for the orphanage.  He said local musicians were always willing to perform free-of-charge at charity events or even at a reduced cost.

He said if the Masiela Trust Fund were willing to pay a foreign artiste P80,000, then they should have shared the money amongst local artistes. He decried that it was "unfair that a foreign artiste should be paid this type of money for one show while local musicians get a pittance". Another musician, Ndingo Johwa, also said local musicians could have been available to offer their services to Masiela.   Masiela Trust Fund patron Margaret Nasha defended their decision to bring in Masekela, saying that they have roped in local artistes like Lister Boleseng and Matsieng as well.  Nasha admitted that Masekela was going to be paid in the region of P80,000.  However, she could not disclose how much the local groups would be paid.
