"I will gladly go through the trial of fire"

"Fire" (1996) showed yesterday at 7 pm at the Maru a Pula School, A/V Centre (Gaborone Film Society). Fire is the first in the great film trilogy, Fire, Earth and Water by Deepa Mehta.

"Hindu fundamentalist formations denounced it as obscene, immoral and offensive to Indian culture and the Hindu religion, and attempted to have it banned". The Shiv Sena succeeded in closing a number of cinemas in India where Fire was showing. What was all the turmoil about?

The opposition was based on the belief that Deepa Mehta's film glorified lesbianism. Fire doesn't, but it does deal with sensitivity and insight into a variety of human problems generated where tradition and change clash.
