Dj Trax Revolutionised

One of the young Batswana entertainers who will always be associated with the June 16 Uprising is Thato Mokgele aka Dj Trax.

Dj Trax will forever be associated with the June 16 student uprising in South Africa, when students went on a peaceful march against the introduction of the teaching of Afrikaans in black schools and were slaughtered by the apartheid police force.
His father is the brave gentleman carrying the dying Hector Petterson in the world's famous June 16 picture. Fearing for his life, Mbuyisa crossed the border into Botswana where he met Kay in Mochudi. In 1977, before DJ Trax was born, Mbuyisa moved on to Nigeria for fear of being hunted down in Botswana.
The family has never had contact with him ever since. Trax grew up in Mochudi where he attended standards One and Two before moving to Legae Academy in Gaborone for the rest of his primary education. He did his high school in Marist Brothers School, a Catholic School in Zimbabwe. He also went to Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) where he enrolled but did not complete AAT. He however has a certificate in accounting.  DJ Trax has always been very interested in music from a very young age, especially house music, no wonder he developed an interest in becoming a DJ. He was inspired by DJ Mbuso who encouraged him to become a DJ. He bought his first records(vinyls) from Easy B. He learnt how to mix in 1998 and since then DJ Trax has been spinning discs all over Botswana.
He has played at all the major clubs and venues all over the country. He has played with a lot of top Botswana and South African DJs, including Choto, Owen, McD, Bush, Rwaza, TCM, Robin, Mbuso, Fresh, Claude, Oskido and Cleo etc. In South Africa he has done gigs in Mafikeng, Rustenburg and Johannesburg.  He came up with the concept of a CD compilation in 2005 and approached Mbuso to assist him. The duo contacted Vusi and EMI for a deal with an album that was produced by Jerah and Mbuso. However, the deal did not initially materialise.
Vusi decided to call Seabelo Modibe, Hip Hop Pantsula's business partner in Botswana whom he had known for some time to find out more about DJ Trax. The deal was brought back to the table where a decision was made to do a fresh project for 2007. A production crew in Botswana called Groove Cartel was commissioned to produce some tunes for the album, while DJ Mbuso and his Phezulu Records producers were hired to do the other tunes in South Africa.
The production was completed by last month and the release of the album, entitled Revolutionised Vol 1, was set for this week (first week of June). The album contains 14 tunes, three of which were produced by Groove Cartel and 11 by DJ Mbuso and the Phezulu Records producers. The lead single Safa Saphel Isizwe, is a remake of Mbongeni Ngema's tune.
This album is set to make DJ Trax one of the most recognisable faces, not only in South Africa, but also possibly throughout the world. His physical resemblance to his father is undoubtedly going to make him a darling of people who are well aware of the legend of June 16. His huge DJ talent may soon make him a very unique DJ who will not only rub shoulders with the ordinary folk in the street and clubs but with politicians and dignitaries around the globe because of his ties to June 16, the Day of The Child!
