Constance Nagafela: An award-winning craftswoman

Many Batswana women who were previously happy to remain on the sidelines as spectators have not taken up the challenge, snapping up opportunities arising from the country's women empowerment programmes.

Constance Nagafela is undoubtedly one of them. She is one of the most hard working craftswomen and the awards she has won so far testify to this fact.
However, she admits that she became a craftswoman by chance, having started off as an employee of the Department of Information and Broadcasting (DIB) from 1998 to 2000.
Whilst working at DIB, she opened a kiosk near her work place where she sold cooked food to her fellow employees.
"I then realised that I made more money in the catering business than I did at work; so I resigned," says Nagafela.

It was while serving her clients in 2000 that she met some employees from the Animal Health Department (Ministry of Agriculture) who told her about their tanning and leatherwork programme and she immediately enrolled.
The hardworking Nagafela always emerged tops in a class of 15.
"By the time I finished the course, the catering industry was becoming saturated, so I quit to become a full-time craftswoman," says Nagafela.
After graduating, Nagafela taught at Ikago Centre in Molepolole for three years before becoming self-employed.
Although for a number of years she was operating from home, her artistry did not escape the eyes of women empowerment organisations.
In 2004, she got position three in the Women in Business competition organised by SADC.
Two years later, she scooped first prize (Leather works) in the Women's Expo organised by the Women's Affair Department.
This year, she repeated her feat and won first prize (Arts & Craft Level 2) at the same expo.
