Collecting society in catch-22 situation

It will take some time before local musicians can be paid royalities for their works. Although a collecting society was formed last year, it has been incapacitated by lack of funds.

The chairperson of the Collecting Society of Botswana, Solomon Monyame, said they have made very little progress on the ground.  He said they spent some time getting in touch with regional and international organisations.  The organisations provided frameworks particularly in rating areas.

Monyame, who is also a producer, said they have been trying to get the basics in place.
The next stage is to hire people and train them. "Some organisations are willing to come and train us.  But whom are we going to train?  We don't have employees.  We are caught in a catch-22 situation," said Monyame, adding that a collecting society is a huge organisation.
