The 2008 Botswana Training Authority (BOTA) and Department of Culture and Youth HIV and AIDS drama finals held over the weekend showcased Botswana's wealth of talent.

From the outset it was clear the four colleges - Megasize College, Lobatse Brigades, Gaborone Technical College and Maranyane Institute - were determined to snatch top honours. The first group to take the stage was Gaborone Technical College (GTC) with the play entitled Tswai La Tampa Tse, which gives the audience a direct view into the lives of HIV/AIDS orphans and the suffering they endure at the hands of their guardians. The play itself addresses the realities of what is taking place in Botswana, a country that is grappling with AIDS. It is common knowledge that some orphans have been forced out of homes because of neglect. Some of these children have gone on to live on the streets, sleeping in culverts and feeding on garbage. The college tried hard with song, dance and action to depict this sad state of affairs. For their efforts they got fourth position.

Megasize College had a script titled ...E Seng Ke Tshela. They gave the script a lot of justice, capturing the story of a guardian who stigmatises an orphan under her care. She is portrayed as a woman who takes advantage to harass the orphan. She does not care about the orphan, but rather for the food rations that come monthly to help her charge stave off the pangs of hunger. This is true in our daily lives. Government officials have often lambasted guardians for failing to look after orphans and greedily taking the children's food rations for their own consumption. It is also a fact that some guardians, in fact, sell the food rations imply to buy liquor.
