Bakgatla throng Kgotla for Queen Mother Exhibition

The Bakgatla baga Kgafela Women's Day was celebrated with a grand photographic exhibition of their queen mother, Mma Seingwaeng Kgafela.

The Bakgatla main Kgotla in Mochudi was filled to capacity as Bakgatla and other well-wishers came in numbers to witness history in the making. The life of the late Bakgatla paramount chief, Linchwe II Kgafela, was depicted in both lecture and photography through a makeshift exhibition room at the main Kgotla. The ceremony gave the public a deeper understanding of the lives of the late Kgafela and Mma Seingwaeng. The exhibition revealed Mma Seingwaeng's social and professional life, hence giving the public a vivid picture of the queen mother in her youthful and adult life. Mounted to honour the queen mother, the event attracted University of Botswana (UB) academics, local traditional leaders and their counterparts from many neighbouring countries, including South Africa. The exhibited photos show Mma Seingwaeng performing her duties such as welcoming "mephato ya bo mme" at the Kgotla. The guest speaker, Kgosi Mosadi Seboko, praised Mma Seingwaeng for the contributions she has made in the lives of Bakgatla and the nation at large. Kgosi Seboko pointed out that as a former nurse, Mma Seingwaeng started a non-profit making association aimed at fighting the HIV/AIDS scourge. She asserted that the association, called Bakgatla Bolokang Matshelo, has been in operation since 1998 and offers counselling services to orphans and the terminally ill. Kgosi Seboko revealed that the association, which is under the Ministry of Health, receives assistance from individuals, business organisations, churches, and women's associations. She added that even though Mma Seingwaeng was married at  the tender aged of 23, she had to perform other national duties. Kgosi Seboko revealled Mma Seingwaeng had to join her husband in the United States of America (US) in 1968 when Kgafela was appointed Botswana's ambassador to Washington.

Mma Seingwaeng enrolled at the Anglican Holy Cross where she completed her primary education before moving on to Klinaton Training Institute for secondary education. She finished her tertiary education with the Anglican Church Hospital Nursing School in Soweto. The 66-year-old Mma Seingwaeng and Kgafela are blessed with four children, including Kgafela Kgafela who will be installed as Bakgatla Paramount Chief on September 20. The other three children are Seingwaeng, Mokgatle and Mmusi.
