Afro pop star is born

The Afro pop/jazz genre is growing fast in the country. Add a new name, Kgotla, to the list that includes Shanti-Lo, Nono, Puna, Lister Boleseng and Soca Moruakgomo. Mike Mogotsakgotla Kgaodi aka Kgotla was born and bred in Moshupa in the early 80's.

He realised his gift of singing when he was only 12years old, in part, due to the fact that he came from a musical family.  He says, "It came as no surprise to me that I could serenade people with my vocal abilities at that tender age. Growing in the church developed me and led me into being what I am today".

Today Kgotla finds himself knocking on the door of fame and fortune. But reaching this stage was not easy. A lot of doors were slammed in his face as he searched for a viable record deal. At one point he says he thought of giving up. But the music bug that bit him at an early age would not let him do that. His breakthrough came when he met Tshepo Lesole at Tracks Studio where he had gone to record a demo. He was impressed Lesole believed in him so much that he decided to assist him all the way.
