A year of the 'Lord's favour' for arts, culture

There are indications that 2009 will be one of the rosiest years ever for entertainment, arts and culture. Although some people in the entertainment industry are not happy with the stringent liquor regulations introduced last year, most people agree that the President Ian Khama loves the arts because as soon as he assumed office, he introduced some initiatives aimed at empowering artists.

It is also encouraging to note that Batswana are beginning to appreciate the arts better as illustrated by the number of people who turned up at different events. Following are some activities and awards that lovers of entertainment, arts and culture should look out for this year.

Orange Botswerere,
Botswana Artists Award
These awards are one of the grandest awardsin the country and the fact that they have several categories makes them one of the most respected in the country. Sponsored by Orange Botswana and supported by the Department of Culture and Youth, the awards have, music, dance, visual arts, photography, film & video, and creative writing categories. The only snag about the Orange Botswerere awards is that they are biennial otherwise, they would fit the 'mother of local awards' label.
