Girls' Under-13 Cricket League Kicks-Off

The annual government primary schools girls' Under-13 Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) league is expected to start today.

The league will feature 12 schools from Gaborone and surrounding areas. It will be a 15-Over competition, an upgrade from the four overs in last year's event.

In today's fixtures, champions Ramogotsi Primary School is up against Rasesa while Phillip Moshotle face Oodi.Girish Ramakrishna said the league will be used to select a team of 15 to represent Botswana at a regional competition that includes South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and hosts Namibia in August. "At the end of the league, we will shift our focus to the selected squad," he said. He added that they will conduct intensive training sessions to hone the girls' skills. Currently, the BCA has a girls' squad that practices every Saturday at the Gaborone Cricket Club (GCC). Ramakrishna said he expects the league to be interesting as the girls will be competing against each other to make it to the top 15. He said if necessary, they will recruit promising players outside the selected squad to play in Namibia.
