Botswana Progressive Union: An alternative workers� union

The formation of the new union, Botswana Progressive Union hereinafter referred to as BOPU has come at a time when workers in the entire public service have lost confidence in the existing Trade Unions and in particular in the leadership which is self-centred and greedy.

Botswana Public Sector Unions have lost direction, strategic focus and above all, have divorced their mandate of being the voice of the voiceless; instead, they have been turned into businesses.

I therefore perceive the formation of a new united front or liberalisation movement as a welcome development, though I do not support or subscribe to fragmentation and divisions amongst unions across the spectrum.
