Education sector unions have dug their heels in on participation in school sport after the government had announced plans to launch the resumption of the program.

President Duma Boko was due to launch the return of school sport program today, after activities were halted in 2019 due to disagreements over teachers' allowance payments. The launch has been moved to Thursday but teachers' unions are not amused. In a joint statement today, Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) and the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) urged their members to stay away from school sport. "The Unions remain steadfast that they have not been consulted on the detailed nature of the School Sports program that is to be launched, consequently, the roles and responsibilities expected of teachers remain unclear," reads the statement.

"Members are therefore strongly advised to refrain from participating in any School Sports activities until their unions have been properly engaged and have communicated the outcome of those engagement," the Unions said. Further the bodies indicated that they support the commencement of school sport but want "open and candid engagement" that will help better run the program.
