Representatives from the country's 16 elite league teams are expected to debate a hot potato when the Botswana Football League (BFL) holds its annual general meeting next Saturday. Amongst items on the agenda is a proposal to increase teams to 18, a motion tabled by BDF XI chairperson Nelson Gabofiwe. The proposal comes at a time when most of the FNB Premiership sides battle for survival amidst rising costs.

It comes three years after a failed push to reduce teams from 16 to 12. The BFL previously endorsed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to downsize in a staggered approach.

The proposal aimed to relegate a higher number of teams at the end of each season whilst promoting fewer from the lower divisions until the 12-team goal was reached.
