Makwala gives up on ‘his’ stadium

Back in 2017, former president Ian Khama announced that Tutume Stadium will be named Isaac Makwala Stadium in honour of the athlete's resilient performance at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London.

Makwala was initially denied a chance to compete due to a health scare but was eventually permitted to race in a 200m solo run, which catapulted the athlete to global stardom. He then went on to clock 20.20 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals after being cleared to compete following norovirus quarantine.

The stadium's construction faced several delays, but work by contractors for components like the boundary wall and change rooms started in late 2021.
