Following the games, BNOC this week launched a 10-year technical apparel partnership with Nike, making the global brand Team Botswana’s technical partner through to 2036.According to the agreement, the partnership encompasses comprehensive technical gear allocations, athlete podium performance incentives and investments in youth legacy programmes across all major international competitions. The apparel agreement is valued at more than $7.8 million (P104 million), delivered through high-performance technical kit and athlete performance incentives until 2036.Under the deal, athletes who win Olympic medals will receive bonuses. For gold, the athlete gets $30,000 (approximately P400,000), $20,000 (approximately P270,000) for silver and $10,000 (approximately P135,000) for bronze.During Commonwealth Games, gold medallists will receive $20,000 (approximately P270,000), silver medallists $10,000 (approximately P135,000) while bronze medallists go home with $5,000 (approximately P67,000).“The partnership covers all major multi-sport delegates under the BNOC mandate, including the Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, and Commonwealth Games. Nike will outfit national delegations with high-performance competition uniforms, Athletics Village apparel, official travel gear, podium ceremony wear and formal hospitality apparel,” reads a statement from BNOC announcing the deal.Nike will also provide $20,000 (approximately P270,000) annually towards a co-designed youth sport legacy programme, bringing the total commitment to $200,000 (approximately P2.7 million) over 10 years.According to the statement, the partnership explicitly protects and fully respects elite athletes’ pre-existing personal sponsorship contracts outside their official delegation duties.By fully absorbing the team’s apparel costs, the partnership will allow BNOC to redirect crucial operational funding towards direct high-performance athlete preparation, training camps and grassroots sport development.BNOC president, Tshepo Sitale, described the deal as one of the most significant technical partnerships in the history of Botswana sport.“We are not simply unveiling a kit sponsor. We are declaring a new standard of ambition, preparation and national representation, he said at the launch.“We are opening a new chapter in the story of Team Botswana.”Sitale highlighted that Botswana would no longer attend major Games merely to participate, but to compete, contest and win.He also stated that local athletes had come of age and that institutions, systems and partnerships must now rise to meet their ambition. According to Sitale, BNOC aspired to move from gold to greatness.“Gold is an extraordinary achievement. But greatness is not an isolated moment. Greatness is a system.“Gold is the moment the world sees on the podium. Greatness is everything that makes that moment possible: talent identification, coaching, sport science, preparation, sound governance, strategic investment, and the sacrifices made when no cameras are watching,” he explained.Sitale added that the Nike partnership represented a deliberate shift away from dependence on charity and short-term assistance towards high-value commercial partnerships that recognise the worth of Botswana’s athletes, national identity and sporting brand. He said Botswana was not asking the world or the private sector to support its sport out of sympathy, but inviting them to invest because its athletes had demonstrated excellence, integrity and enormous potential.“Our athletes must not be given generic clothing and simply asked to compete. Wherever technically possible, their apparel must respond to the specific demands of their sporting codes and the highest standards of international competition,” Sitale said.
