Why the BFA may curse itself

By the end of the qualifying phase for both the 2008 Olympics and Africa Cup of Nations, the Botswana Football Association (BFA) will probably be cursing itself for missing a very good opportunity.

At the beginning of the qualifiers, the national soccer team, the Zebras had a good chance of qualifying for next year's African Cup of Nations for the first time. The national Under-23 side had a remote chance of qualifying for Beijing 2008 given the fact that they had been paired with giants like Cameroon and Morocco.

For the Zebras' only Egypt posed a threat in the bid to qualify for the African Cup of Nations in Ghana. What however transpired in the first game totally diminished the Zebras' chances as they uncharacteristically lost 4-0 to the little known Mauritania. But the Under-23 side put up a brave fight against Morocco before narrowly losing 1-0. And, while optimism turned to despair for the senior team, skepticism turned to hope for the juniors.
