Token sponsorships out - BoBA chief

Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) president, Michael Moroka has warned any company willing to associate with the sport that he will not be accepting token sponsorship.

Moroka told boxing affiliates over the past weekend that companies should start treating sports with the respect it deserves and stop giving small donations and expect them to be accepted as sponsorships. "I am sorry, but I think we passed that stage where we accept donations from people and call that sponsorships. They get a whole lot of mileage through this, while in real terms the sport does not benefit," he said.

Moroka's comments come at the time when the association is still looking for a sponsor for the annual 'Best of the Best' Boxing Tournament, which brings together the best boxers from the national championships. The tournament was postponed from December 2012 to this year as BoBA was still in negotiations with potential sponsors. The association had then said it would be inappropriate for a tournament with the country's best boxers to proceed without a sponsor.
