Ben Tobedza, the defending champion of the Botswana Golf Union (BGU) flagship event, the Independence Open, has vowed to retain the title when 210 golfers tee-off at the Gaborone Golf Club tomorrow.

"It is the premier event and every golfer is itching to have a go at it. It is not just about the fabulous prizes, but the prestige as well. Every golfer wishes that one day he or she could have this trophy in their respective homes," he said.

Tobedza won the event as the overall best player in the A Division to beat others competing in the Championship and C Division last year. At the time of writing he had not made up his mind whether he would like to compete under the A or the Championship Division this year following a good showing in previous events. "Everybody will be going for it. Guys are working hard. The golf course has lately been a hive of activity as every golfer has been preparing for the tournament, but I have not been idle either," he told Mmegi Sport.
