Softball side upbeat despite tough draw

The Botswana Softball Association (BSA) has said it is not worried about the tough draw handed to the Under-19 side for the World Softball Championships which South Africa hosts in December.

According to the draw, Botswana is in the same group as defending champions United States of America (US) and third ranked Canada in Pool A. Other teams are hosts South Africa, China, New Zealand, Czech Republic and Puerto Rico. Botswana faces South Africa in the opening match to be held in Cape Town.

BSA spokesperson Kabelo Kwape, although admitting that it is the tougher of the two pools, believes they stand a chance of winning at least one game against less experienced Puerto Rico and South Africa. Puerto Rico has just started developing the sport. Just like Botswana, South Africa and Puerto Rico will be making their second appearances at the tournament, which has attracted 16 countries. Kwape said beating the two teams would not be easy. He said even a less experienced side like Puerto Rico might have an edge over Botswana because it plays international matches in Europe on a regular basis. He said their desire to send local teams to such competitions is deterred by financial problems.  Meanwhile, Kwape said the team continues to prepare for tournament although at a slower rate since most of the players are students.
